2015 Bencher Candidate
AAA
triple A Platform.
I have never been a Bencher, so I can't say how much impact I will have. What I can say, is that I am prepared to dedicate time and energy on various committees tasked with the following initiatives and I look forward to building on the efforts of past Benchers.
Access to Justice
Attrition Crisis
- Continue support for Pro Bono initiatives
- Prevent further erosion of the Legal Aid certificate program
- In addition to Legal Aid and pro bono, adding to the
continuum of services with models such as unbundling and
legal expense insurance
- Expand community outreach programs to assist with early
management of legal issues and informal dispute resolutions
Adapting to Future
- Leverage technologies to assist lawyers to practice law and
run a business
- Oppose the introduction of Alternative Business Structures
- Streamline LSUC regulation, rather than over-regulate
- Clamp down on improper advertising by lawyers on websites and social media
- Proactively ensuring that people with disabilities don’t face
accessibility barriers when trying to use and benefit from the
services offered by lawyers and when involved in legal
proceedings, and to ensure that lawyers with disabilities don’t
face accessibility barriers when qualifying to practice, or when
practicing
- Retain women in the profession
- Expand the Parental Leave Program
- Improve opportunities for racialized members and members
with disabilities
- Enhance the availability of mentorship to junior lawyers
In making decisions as a Bencher, I will be guided by asking myself the following five questions:
1. How will this decision impact our members at large?
2. How will this decision impact specific segments of members (e.g. women, sole practictioners, and racialized members)?
3. How will this decision impact access to justice?
4. How can technology be leveraged to maximize the implementation of this decision?
5. How does this decision accord with the Rule of Law?
